Volcano Drac

Volcano Drac By Abigail Bethune

It has been the third time this week that I woke up drenched in sweat. The heat has never been this hot in Glardon since 1976, well that's what my grandma told me.

I live with my mom and three sisters. After breakfast, my sisters and I decided to go to the back of the house where it is cool. The sun shines down as I sat under a mango tree watching Sasha and Kayla play.

There was a river behind our house where my mom sits to wash. She tells us never to go swimming without her around. The river was calling to me from my seat and with how hot it is I don't think it was a bad idea.

Looking around to see if anyone was watching I reached over to dip just my hand in the water when my younger sister by one year appeared.

"You wouldn't dare, mom told us not to go in," she said folding her arms.

"You talk too much Nicky" I hissed at her. There goes my chance.

"Alright do it and I won't tell." She said putting up her hands in surrender. I scoffed at her and turned away. I don't trust her, as soon as I do it she would go and blubber her mouth.

"Scardy Cat!!" She teased.

"Shut up!!" I yelled at her. The other girls ran over to see what was happening.

"Tasha I knew you couldn't do it. You're such a mommy's girl. I'll do it." Nicky said and dipped her hands in the water. She jumped back with an ear-splitting scream clutching her hands to her Redshirt.

"What's wrong?" Kayla the youngest asked with wide eyes.

"It burns." Nicky whimpered. I rolled my eyes at that. She would do anything for attention.

" Stop lying." I glared at her.

" I'm not" she cried.

I pursed my lips and pushed them back out of the way. I went to dip my hands in the water myself when everything started to shake.

We all started to scream. Kayla clutched to my purple shirt for dear life, Sasha grabbed onto a nearby coconut tree and Nicky was rolled into a ball on the ground.

"Girls!!" My mom called out to us and we rushed over. She checked us for any major damage and lead us out of the house with a brown bag on her shoulders where she keeps our important documents.

We were now engulfed in chaos on the road. I looked up for the first time realizing a stream of smoke coming from the volcano. It has been dormant for years, no one saw this coming.

We made our way to the beach where a big boat was loaded with people, rushing to beat nature at its game. The island shook again in warning as the boat left shore. Children's faces were fixed in fear and the adults' were marked with frowns. We all looked longingly at our island anticipating the moment Volcano Drac decided to blow.
